It surprises me that so many businesses don’t realize how important their Google rank is to their business. Companies who do “get it” happily spend thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars on search engine optimization for their website every year and are making a killing. They’re picking up their customers and your customers too. They know when their site ranks well the return on their investment can be staggering. But just how many people will click on your site if it’s ranked # 1 versus #5 or even #10? Slingshot SEO completed an enormous 6 month web study to find out. Here’s what they found regarding website position and percentage of searchers who clicked on the listings: #1 position = 18.2%, #2 = 10.05%, #3 = 7.22%, 4 = 4.81%, 5 = 3.09%, 6 = 2.76%, 7 = 1.88%, 8 = 1.75%, 9 = 1.52%, 10 = 1.04%. If you’re on page 2 or more, forget about it because it’s much less than 1%. So what does this mean? Say your Chinese restaurant website is in the 7th position on Google for the search phrase “Phoenix Chinese Restaurant” and 10,000 people search for “Phoenix Chinese Restaurant” this month. It stands to reason this would lead to 188 visits to your website. But if you’re in the #1 position, your website should get about 1,820 visitors this month, roughly 9x the amount of web traffic as when you were #7. That’s an enormous difference for climbing just a few positions under one search phrase. Now what if you were also ranked #1, 2 or 3 for numerous other search phrases as well? See where this is going? You have to ask yourself how much is 9x, 100x or even several thousand times more visitors to your website worth to you? Website optimization is where it's at!

Just how is Google doing? Wrap your noggin around this… Google is predicted to take home more than 70% of all U.S. mobile ad dollars in 2012. AdMob, Google’s mobile ad network currently accounts for 24 percent of U.S. mobile network ad buys. The next largest is Millennial Media which carries less than 17%. Now take Google's 24% and add it to their vastly dominant share in the mobile search ad market. You'll find that Google is poised to take home more than 70% of overall U.S. dollars spent on mobile advertising in 2012. Okay, we’ve all gotten the emails and seen their ads... broken-English promises from dubious SEO and link building companies that sound too good to be true. Most are associated with India or some Eastern European country. You think "Hey, it’s only a thousand bucks so what’s the worst that can happen?" Well here’s how it works... You give them your money and if you’re lucky they’ll just take it and never speak to you again. If you’re not so lucky, they’ll add your link to hundreds of their own temporary websites and directories (Google hates this.) They’ll create fake accounts on forums and make bogus comments with a link to your site. Forum owners and users hate this and some will report your site to Google. And if you’re really unlucky, you’ll get added to this dubious company’s spamming system. This is the equivalent of website suicide. You might actually gain some ranking on Google at first, but after a couple of months most of your links will vanish. Then when Google finds out your site is a part of the scheme, they’ll ban it from the search engine. The truth is, when it comes to SEO, there is no fast-track. Cheap and dirty solutions end badly. We love this new online branding commercial put out by Foot Locker and Nike. It seems to appeal to both new and old school and makes us want to watch it again and again. The branding is powerful, giving a strong attitude and personality to both companies. We won't even knock it for being blatantly derivative of the old school intros to Fresh Prince of Bel Air and even older school Fat Albert cartoons (although more technologically advanced.) We think the similarities make the ad and the brands more subliminally appealing in a nostalgic, feel-good way. Well done Foot Locker.04-27-2011
That's right folks MySpace is on the auction block again starting at a paultry hundred mil. Previously sold to News Corp. in 2005 for $580 mil., MySpace took a nosedive when people abandoned ship for FaceBook in 2009. It never recovered. But perhaps YOU have great plans for its recovery? For years search engine marketing professionals included reciprocal linking in their SEO strategies. You know..."I'll add your link on my website if you add my link on your website." Then there was talk about Google punishing you for reciprocal links so people avoided it. Many search engine marketing pros still believe this bad information and will only do one-way linking for their clients' websites. They're missing the boat and their clients are paying for it.
